Camping, Running and Basketball (not in that order)

Basketball:
If we continue with Joe Hays' logic, Texas A&M could beat Texas by 9 points. :) I am becoming more and more of an LSU fan! Kelly, we're rooting loud down here in Aggieland -- go Tigers!!!

Running:
Today I did something I've never done before in my life. I ran (and walked a little) a 5K. David and I went to Brenham and met up with some friends of ours from Houston, Jeremy & Lindsay. David & Jeremy ran the 5K together and Lindsay and I ran together. The guys finished in about 34 minutes and the girls in about 40 minutes. I think we could have done better, but there were at least 5, maybe 6 (I lost count) really big hills.

We started on the Brenham HS campus and as we left campus and turned left, David said his first thought as he saw the first hill that lay before us, "Oh, Shelley's gonna kill me." He had warned me that there would be one big hill (he and Dad ran the 10K last year), but he was surprised by the number of large hills on the 5K. Oh well, live and learn.

We ran out 2.5 K on a two lane road outside of town, turned around and ran back. At about the turn around, Lindsay said, "I thought there were supposed to be a lot of bluebonnets." I said, "Yea, they promised bluebonnets. I'm gonna complain." As we ran down the next hill (#4 I think), I looked over and there were bluebonnets. I said, "Were these here when we were going up this hill?" Neither of us had seen them. We were concentrating pretty hard on making it up the hill.

We were rewarded with all you can eat Blue Bell ice cream when it was all over. I think that's the first time I've eaten ice cream at 9:15 in the morning. :)

Camping:
Last weekend we had a large group planning to go camping near Lake Somerville. We were going to go for two nights (because it was Spring Break) and had been looking forward to it for weeks. As the day drew closer and we watched the weather, it went from bad to worse. It was b/w 30-50% chance of rain the whole weekend, highs in the mid 50s. The night before, David and I decided that there just wouldn't be any fun in sitting in a tent all day with Jeremiah while it rained. So we bailed out, as did everyone else after we sent our email.

To help pacify Samuel, we decided to find a hotel in Houston for one night with an indoor pool. Turns out David still had Hilton Honors points from years ago and we were able to get 2 free, connecting rooms at a hotel near the Willowbrook mall. The Fogles went with us and we swam, ate at Pappasitos, swam some more, put the boys to bed in one room and played cards until late. Got up the next morning, ate breakfast and swam some more, then headed home. It was a lot of fun. Here are a couple pics.

Jeremiah watching a little Elmo while the big boys watch something a little more exciting.

I pray you have a blessed day tomorrow with your church family!

Hills, I hate hills. Ironic, right? Really I just hate the big ones while running or cycling. Way to go on finishing and finishing in 40 minutes. Proud of you. I shook hands today with Lynna on running the Capital 10K next year (about this time). You guys in? :)

Good job! Yay for all you can eat Blue Bell. You can't beat that!

I still remember going on a trip like that when I was little. We lived in Pearland (so I had to be less then 9) and we went to Galveston and stayed at Hotel Galvez. We swam all we could because it was winter time. I told my parents of my memories a while back and they informed me that they actually went to Galveston for their anniversary and came and got us to spend a night with them and swim! Funny!

My first run, ever, was a 5K. I have long since forgotten the time, but I remember that I would have walked to the finish if it hadn't been for the friend with whom I was running - a young Lieutenant who had done a good bit of running. And, I also remember it as a flat course. Part of my problem was we saw the finish line and I was greatly heartened by it. Then, as we got closer we realized it was not the finish line - we still had more than a half mile to go. Bummer!! But, we finished! That's when I learned that running is mostly a mental battle.

Congratulations!! What a blessing to be able to run and finish. I am overjoyed that you decided to accept the challenge and then had to courage to go out there and DO IT. I'm also glad to hear you say you could have done better. To me that means you will do better because you've already recognized that the challenge still exists. Way to go, Shelley! Also, thanks for the encouragement you gave, Dave, by also running. I hope to be able to run with you both next year.

I, also, am really proud of you!! You did way better than I would have done, I'm sure. : ) I love the bluebonnet story! I probably would have noticed them on the way up the hill and decided to stop and rest in the pretty bluebonnets and wait for the others to catch up with me on their way back. But that's just me! Thanks for all the pics, including the ice skating ones. Those boys really need to stop growing so quickly when I'm not around. Would you relay that message to them, please?
Love,
Sara

Wow! Way to Go Shelley! So, there's hope for me yet. I've started jogging/walking a couple of miles 2x a week. Can't get in the routine to do it more :) But someday it would be nice to run a 5k. I have a friend who started out walking 5ks and now she's run half marathons, done a short triathalon and is about to ride her bike from Houston to Austin (UGH!) Don't know that I'll get there. Maybe we can run some together in June-if I can keep up with you :)
