Our Gift from God

We have lots of gifts from God, but the one I want to talk about today is Samuel. Samuel is six years old. And he is getting bigger everyday. I don't just mean in size, he is just growing up. There is such a big difference between 5 and 6. I didn't realize it until I experienced it. Anyway, I have to tell this story.

Yesterday in the car, we were talking about making Valentines for his classmates. I reminded him about making them for his teachers and his grandparents, etc. Here's the conversation that followed:

Samuel: Oh, I just thought of something, but I don't want God to hear it.

Me: Why not?

Samuel: Because I want it to be a surprise.

Me: Sorry. God already heard it because He knows what you're thinking.

Samuel. Oh. (beat) Well, I have a great plan. I am going to make a Valentine for God. Then, when I'm about to die, I'm going to carry it around with me. And when I come back to life, I can give it to God. Maybe a lot of people have thought of that and God can get lots of Valentines. (beat) Or, maybe I'm the only one whose had that thought.

Is that cute, or what? Samuel has definitely been given the gift of giving. (Is that a gift?) He is always wanting to give something to someone -- anything, anyone. I pray that we will never quench that gift.

Also, we had our Parent/Teacher Conference today. It's so nice to have objective, educated, outsiders confirm what you've always known -- that your child is the smartest, most well behaved, most polite, most enjoyable kid in the world. :) I mean, they didn't use those words, exactly, but you knew it's what they were thinking. Seriously, Samuel has improved so much! They gave him some reading/writing tests at the beginning of the year and then gave them again in January. I won't explain the tests, just that on the first one Samuel scored a 5/54 before school started and scored 53/54 in January. There were several other tests like that and the improvement was just as marked. Learning to read and write is something I do not understand. Thank you, Lord for Mrs. Peterson and Senor Osth and the gift you have given them to teach and train young people.

BTW, Jeremiah is talking more and more every day and is as cute as ever -- just thought you might like to know. When I have Jeremiah stories, I'll be sure and post them. :)

Hurrah! I love that Samuel story and I miss him and those precious conversations! I hope we do get to see you all this weekend. I'm feeling sorry for myself this week in not being with our grandkids much anymore:-( Thanks for sharing that incredible story! And reminding me about valentine's day, too!

An incredible mind! Such precious thoughts. I don't remember having thoughts like that...although my Mom would have blogged about them if such a thing existed. It'll be fun to share those with him as he gets older. And yes, giving is a gift! We need more of them around.
