Happy Birthday Samuel

December is always a very busy month for the Park family. The first big event is the celebration of the birth of our first child. Samuel David Park was born on December 15, 1999. That means that, although we do not completely understand it, he turned six years old this month.

Because his birthday is so close to Christmas, we try to make as big a deal about it as we can, so as not to fall into the trap of forgetting the one in recognition of the other (my grandmother can attest to the negative aspect of having your birthday so close to Christmas as hers is Dec. 27 -- Happy Belated MeeMaw!). Part of the tradition (can you have a tradition after only 6 years?) is that Samuel has a say in deciding the theme of his party. This year he made a list of about 10 different theme options. Then in a very engineering type fashion, did "Eeny, meeny, miney, moe" through the list. Whichever theme won the game 10 times first was the theme he would choose for his party. The theme this year was "Balloons". So we began the process of planning a Balloon Party.

The invitations were written on balloons, we enlisted a clown to do balloon art, we played balloon games, we ate a balloon cake and the kids took home balloon cookies, as well as "Rocket Balloons" complete with pump, in a bag with balloons on it tied with a balloon in place of a ribbon.

Thirteen children came, several from his Kindergarten class. I am excited about the relationships we are building with his friends and their families. This Trevor (from Samuel's class) and his brother Tony after Samuel opened the very cool race track they gave him.

All in all, I think the party was a success. The birthday boy had fun! What six year old doesn't have fun when he gets to open gobs of presents.

The final present came on his actual birthday. As he walked home from school, Daddy and I were outside waiting for him with his new 20" bike. For several months, he has been the only kid on the block with a 16" bike, so it was time for him to graduate to the bigger bike (is this keeping up with the Jones' or what?). :) Now that the birthday celebration was over, it was time to get ready for Christmas. That is for a later post.
